Description of Research Setting The setting for this research study was an elementary school in a northeastern United States suburban town, serving kindergarten through sixth-grade students. There were 3,376 students in the Headland School District, 733 of those students attended the South Headland Elementary School (pseudonym). There were 364 males and 369 females. There were 4 preschool classes at South Headland Elementary School, which was the only prekindergarten program in the district, with sixty-one students having attended this program. The school also included 81 kindergarten students in 3 classrooms, two of which were half-day programs. The third classroom housed a full-day kindergarten program. There were 104 students in 4 first-grade classrooms, 92 students in 4 second-grade classrooms, 99 students in 4 third-grade classrooms, 87 students in 4 fourth-grade classrooms, 112 students in 5 fifth-grade classrooms, and there were 97 students in 4 sixth-grade classrooms. Ninety-seven percent of the students attending South Headland Elementary were Causasian, 1% were Hispanic, .8 were Asian, .4 were African-American and .3 were listed as Native Hawaiin/ Pacific Islander. There were no Native Americans or multi-race non-Hispanic. |
